Is Google Adsense the Only Way to Monetize a Blog ?

Google Adsense is the ad-platform by the very known web giant Google. It has been on the web from more than 11 years. Bloggers and websites have generated huge profits from Google Adsense as well. Yesterday I got an email from one of the readers of my blog. The mail was as follows :-

Is google adsense only way to monetize a blog

His question was fairly simple. All he wanted to ask was “Is Google adsense the only way to monetize a blog ?“. Yet I was stuck for a moment before replying. After thinking for a while, I thought it would be better to publish an article on this subject.

-> The Answer : NO ! Google adsense is not the only way to monetize a blog. Instead, Google adsense is one of the worst ways you can hope to earn profits from your low traffic blog. Experts like neil patel recommend that ads are typically the worst way you can monetize your blog’s traffic.

Google Ads hold up your potential most of the time. For example if your blog has a potential of earning $2,000 per month, you’ll making as much as $20 per month. Instead of selling your ad space, you can consider selling your ad spot to an advertiser. The most valued advice is to promote your own products and services instead of selling ad spot to Google adsense, or any other ad network.

Another valuable point worth noticing is, if someone clicks on your advertisement, you will loose one reader but you’ll make no more than $0.01.

Can’t you make profits with Google Adsense ?

Yes, you can. But only if you have high volume of traffic. As far as I am concerned, if you have high volumes of traffic, you should consider selling your own products and services.

On the same hand on blogs and websites with low traffic, it is not worth using Google adsense. Instead you can rely on affiliate marketing or other methods of income generation.

My experience With Google Adsense

google adsensea
You might have seen that I am no more selling my ad space to Google adsense. I said good bye to google ads in April this year. Since then I’ve been promoting my own products and services and worked on increasing traffic.

When I was a newbie, I saw Google Adsense as a money heap. I believed that If I could get adsense approval, I’d be generating great profits overnight. However this was not what happened. I worked hard for generating quality rich content in order to get approval. Once I got approval, I placed ads on my blog and waited for some magic to happen. But nothing happened. My earnings graph neither increased even a penny.

I was making a maximum of 10$ per month with adsense. This was the time when an advertiser contacted me. He paid me $50 per month for hosting his banner advertisement in the sidebar. Right after this I made my first sales and got $105 in a single day. This way I learned that Affiliate marketing, selling your own products and services is a better option than selling your ad space to an advertiser.

Ways to Make Money Instead of Google Adsense

google adsense alternatives

Sell your own products ~ This can be the best way to generate profits online. If you have enough skills and start up capital you can sell your own products. You need not to sell any physical products. Products like themes, softwares and other digital products can be sold online.

Although creating your product isn’t that easy. It involves more than one step. First you need to invest a lot of time, effort and hard work in making the product. Secondly you need to create a market to sell your market. Both these things can be pretty time consuming.

Promote and sell other’s products ~ You can promote other’s product and earn a commission for each sale. This is indeed what we call “Affiliate marketing”. It works same like when a agent shows you a property and you purchase it, he gets a commission for his sale.

There are thousands of products available on the world wide web. You can promote these products and earn a commission. Recently I wrote an article on Affiliate marketing ~ “How to Increase profits in Affiliate marketing ?“. You can read that article for a more detail knowledge on this subject.

Sponsored posts ~ Another fair way to make profits from your blog is sponsored post. Sponsored post is basically when you write a post primarily to promote a service. Sponsored posts can be a good way to generate profits. In this advertisers or sponsors contact bloggers to write a post about their service. In return they treat them with some amount of money, to which both parties agree.

Generally cost of a sponsored post starts from $50-$75 depending from the blog and website.

Top 10 Google Adsense Alternatives 2015

There is always an alternative for any service. This works for Google Adsense as well. There are a lot of ad-platforms performing on the web, which makes it hard to select a platform that’ll work for you. Below is a list of top 10 ad-platforms you can use as an alternative for Google Adsense ~

  1. Revenuehits
  2. Bidvertiser
  3. Infolinks
  4. Adversal
  5. Viglink
  7. chitika
  8. Qadabra

Google Adsense is not the only way to Monetize your blog !

One more thing I don’t like about Google Adsense is that it doesn’t provide affiliate marketers with an option to earn while recommending others. Majority of the other ad-platforms provide with an option for marketers to earn money with referral links.

Final words – You might have noticed that majority of the pro-bloggers don’t use Google adsense for making money from their blog. There can be couple of reasons why they aren’t using it. One bold reason behind is bloggers can’t afford to loose a reader for the sake of a penny. When a reader clicks on your ad, it takes him/her to a completely new website, 99% chances are that he/she will never return.

You need not to worry about your profits if your application has been rejected by adsense. There are couple of ways you can generate profits from your blog.

Hii !!
my question is — Is amazon associates a better way to earn money or monetize our websites ?

Uttoran Sen

Hey Rachit,

That is a very valid question that you have addressed. Adsense is surely not the top monatization option for a blog. I am saying this – after earning over $20k+ from adsense alone from 2005 to 2013.

I guess for the blogging and Internet Marketing niche – adsense is not really suited. Unless the traffic is pretty high. My adsense network was on health blogs, so depending on the niche adsense can work.

Thank you for the excellent resource – I have so far used Bidvertiser, Infolinks, Chitika and Kontera. From personal experience, Kontera pays low – that is when I moved to Infolinks which paid much more. I have so far earned plenty with Infolinks keeping both Infolinks and adsense on the same page. Infolinks paid me almost one fifth’s of what I earned from Adsense. But I guess every penny counts 🙂

Uttoran Sen,

    Hi Uttoran,

This is your first visit to my blog and I am glad to see you here for the first time.
Taking a look at your earnings I can say that you really must have hard as you didn’t quit for such a long time period.

I Agree that for Blogging and Internet marketing niche, adsense is not really suited. And for blogs that recieve high traffic, there are pretty more options you can increase your profits with.

I’ve never used infolinks as I thought it can send my readers away. Because several readers reported that they get irritated with infolink ads when they see them on other websites and blogs.

I agree that each penny counts. There is a quote that “A penny saved is a penny earned”.

    Thanks for your valuable comment.
Hope to see you around on my blog again soon.

Hi Rachit

That’s an excellent post with different ways to make money from your blog.

I think the most I ever managed to earn from Adsense on my blog was $12 one month – then I managed to breach some condition in the small print (never found out what) and they banned me and I lost what little I had made.

Completely agree with you on the methods I have tried – and there are some others that I hadn’t heard of, so thanks for introducing me to them.

    Hello Joy,

Nice to see you again on my blog.

I managed to earn $20 per month but I managed it on a website, not a blog. For blogging and Marketing niche, adsense is a painful way to earn.

I am glad I was able to bring in some thing to spotlight,

    Thanks for commenting.

Very nice and appreciable post, I think only with AdSense one can’t make money if he don’t have fair amount of traffic, so for this one will surely go for some other metheds which you have brought in your post above.
Most of the bloggers are not getting much from adsense because of there niche or the traffic. In this case monatization methods like Chitika, Infolonks or RevenueHits can be helpful.
