Ahrefs has more than earned its reputation as one of the best blogging tools when it comes to nailing your SEO strategy blog, with particular focus on keyword research & competitor analysis. To be clear, this tool might be a little advanced (and it's not free) if you're brand new to blogging. Having started back in the day as a backlink checker, many bloggers are not fully aware of how powerful Ahrefs has become as a blogging tool. Competitor Research: This will quickly show the keywords the competitor site ranks for along with traffic estimates)

Keep in mind that traffic estimates are calculated on the basis of the organic position of the site, the number of snippets shown the search carousels and everything else in between.

As such even for small blogs, organic traffic reports can be shockingly accurate.

MailChimp is a system for email management which tracks your email subscribers. It's currently a free blogging tool for lists of up to 2,000 subscribers, which should be enough for new bloggers, and there's a monthly fee after that. MailChimp has excellent statistics so you can determine how many emails you send are actually being opened.


Note Taking App.

You can capture anything including web pages, images, text and voice notes with Evernote that is available as a cell phone or iPad app as well as a web-based app. Your notes can then be viewed from just about anywhere on your computer or mobile device. You can also use Evernote search through all of your notes so that you can quickly find the information you need.

Time Tracking App.

My Hours is an online time-tracking tool to help you work out where all those hours of the day disappear and see which tasks take more time than they should. I've just started using it to track how my time is spent trying to increase productivity. It seems to be easy to use and useful, too.

It took us months to get this sorted out when it happened to us. But it's still the best way to send and receive money internationally that you'll need to do if you want to buy blogging resources or earn money by selling products or services through your blog.

I've just been dealing with Dragon Naturally Speaking Premium, which is speech recognition software for your computer. Yes, there is no more typing.

The free version lets you add two RSS feeds and lets you know if it's worth spending a small fee each month on a professional version.

It also shows worldwide traffic, broken down by country. There's also a category rank showing your own popularity in the niche you're blogging about—for example, food blogging, fashion blogging, travel blogging, or anything else.

You can analyze your visitor location data, how much traffic you get, your referral sites, social traffic, your ranking keywords, paid advertising data and similar sites that you're competing with today. Traffic figures, however should be taken with a grain of salt.

SimilarWeb tends to underestimate traffic counts for sites with an average of less than 50,000 visitors per month, while often overestimating traffic for others.

Laser sharp accuracy is not the purpose of a blogging tool like this though.

SimilarWeb does what Ahrefs doesn't do—help you visualize every channel that sends your blog traffic (and take action to learn how to write blog posts that repeat your successes).

CoSchedule's Headline Analyzer makes our list of top free blogging tools because it quickly checks your headline for balance, length, keywords, sentiment and scores on a scale of 0 to 100.

On the basis of your first analysis, you can play with the wording, length and order of words to see if you can get a higher score. It's important to note, however, that even a headline analysis tool isn't always perfect—it wants the headlines to match a template that might be best ranked for some keyword phrases, but isn't always a guaranteed best choice. That being said, it's a great blogging tool for writers to get a sense of how their headlines are likely to be perceived by readers.


Email Marketing.

The premise of this free blogging tool is deceptively simple—Hunter scrapes the Internet for email addresses, and allows you to enter a domain and see all the emails associated with that company (which have made their way to the Hunter database). It's my go-to find the tool today.

If you need the email address of the CEO, content manager or social media rep, Hunter's email finder will return either their exact email address or their best guess based on other company emails they've uncovered. What's up with this blogging tool is the bulk feature where you can upload a list of domains or contacts to find or check contacts for a larger-scale outreach campaign.

The free plan limits you to 100 searches per month (which is more than enough to implement a thoughtful blog SEO strategy).

Voila Norbet

Email Marketing.

Voila Norbert's remarkable way to process even hundreds of raw CSV files, and to provide you with very accurate contact information for your blog outreach campaigns.

Then with simply one click, without any formatting problems, you will be able to automatically export Google Docs to a WordPress post or page on your blog. Clearly. It's great and it also imports photos with the names that you originally provided the files on your Google Doc.



FocusMe has a particular place in my list of the best blogging tools, as well it helps me to remain focused when critical work is required.

FocusMe aims to help you eliminate energy-draining multitasking as a website and app blocker and restrict the amount of time you spend on distracting websites. Its promise of efficiency is based on the assumption that setting a 2-hour regular curfew for a particular website or app will result in a 25% higher level of productivity.

Inbox When Ready for Gmail


The creators of this special Chrome extension for Gmail noticed just how obsessed we've become with emails today—and tried to rein in that obsession, so you can spend more time on tasks that will actually help your blog grow (rather than answering every single email as it comes in).

Once installed, the extension helps you process emails by batch and minimize how long you spend on each email—by adding the "Show Inbox" button and the "Hide Inbox" button when you're ready to either dive into email or hide your email inbox from view. Personally, it helps me think twice about opening my email inbox.

Another unique feature is that you can still compose new emails while the inbox is still hidden, so you don't have to worry about new emails popping up and stealing your attention. You can also set a frequency limit on how many times you want to check your email on a day—plus set specific time limits for each email.

While I'm going to be the first to tell you to stick with free email marketing tools like Mailchimp as you're just getting started—that won't be the best blogging tool to grow your email list in the long run as your business scales and you can afford to invest in blogging tools like ConvertKit that will do more to create stuff like automations & sequences that can generate revenue from your email list while you're on the go.

Your email subscribers are only a small step away from being paying clients of your online course, the eBook you've published or the service you're providing. For example, I've been able to set up fully automated sales emails that encourage the purchase of either my blogging books or one of my premium blogging courses depending on when and how a new subscriber signs up on my site.
